11.13.12

1.  I want students to comprehend their texts.  I want them to know when they comprehend and when they do not comprehend.  I want students to be able to use the reading strategies to help them either get unstuck, or to help them make meaning.

2.  I brought a set of data of two texts. One was a reading passage, the other was our group text.  i also brought an interview with one focal student.

3.  I see that Xavier can not determine importance in text. He just writes everything that happened in the book. i believe that he knew what was happening in the book because of the help of his group.

I see that Beatriz can determine importance in text.  I don't necessarily think that her questions help her to understand what she reads. I think they're just random questions. On an easy text. However, on the harder text, she asked the question, why did the author put in the details of the fight of Presh and Greb? And I think he put that in to give you a detailed mind picture, overall what I thought was that Greb was a big bully and he should become more mature than brake people's arms.  Her response shows her personality as well as connections and an understanding of the text.

I see that Juan is not really getting much from the book. In his interview he talks about re-reading when he doesn't understand. And that's his main method of helping himself understand.  It's really hard to know what he understands.  There's a lot of vocabulary that he doesn't know.

Leah's point about re-reading is an active thing, so that's something you know when you're doing.

I think the next step for me would be to keep looking at their exit tickets.  Look at some data from a group discussion and see ways that they are making sense of their reading. Implement book clubs where they are using the strategies and look for growth in undertanding weekly?

  • Determining importance in text-huge
  • moving from literal to deeper understanding
  • knowing what you know-what strategy you are using

"one of the things i'm good at is reading a lot, reading quick kind of."
"sometimes I understand everything i read"
come to a word you don't know- read it again.

Favorite books, unfortunate events.

Trouble with reading- I don't know. Sometimes I get carried away.  Keep reading more and couldn't listen to any voice outside.

Look at data set-
Did you have a hard time understanding it?
Yeah.
What do you do when something is hard?
I probably just see like what it kind of like means, like try reading it again.

Why didn't you do these.

This one I couldn't understand it.
The one that you did?
Yes.
So how did you decide what to write down.
I try to keep reading it until I got it.

REads to me.
"They needed a food supply. So it will last them for a few days.  Like if someone had a week's worth of allowance."
Been building like dams, something to block the water.

Is able to parrot back the words, but doesn't necessarily know they mean.  Uses the word canals, but never stops to ask what it means.
