In the extra time I have at work, I've been trying to get through some data organization.
So far, I've got:
-The mentors' entry and exit questionnaires about halfway entered into an excel spreadsheet.
-Weekly survey monkey responses for some of the mentors, and I've downloaded those into a spreadsheet and organized it by week.
Figuring out how to organize all the information seems like a silly task, but it has taken me a while. For instance, should I do it by week or by mentor. I think that depends a lot on how I want to look at the information. My plan was to track changes over time.
Also, should I have a separate survey monkey survey for each week?
Pros:
Easily able to download by week and input into my spreadsheet
Can change questions over time if needed.
Cons:
More work for me, even if it just means copying the survey, putting a new name on it, and sending the link with my weekly email.
Also, I'm still trying to figure out how to work with Survey Monkey and their tools. I've figured out how to download all responses and a summary. I've also sort of figured out the limit thing, which means I can disregard certain responses if I want. But can I do something like, show me all responses for sessions on this date?
I understand excel better (still learning a lot on that front also) so I feel better able to manipulate the data that way. However, if I decide in two months I want to see 4 specific mentors and their development over time, I'll have to cut and paste all of their responses from each page, seems like a lot of extra work.
Otoh, I guess, I could keep one spreadsheet that has all the info, and then cut and paste onto a different spreadsheet with the weeks. That way I have it both ways and it should be pretty easy to manipulate either way.
I'll link to what I've done so far in case anyone notices any redflags that would help me, ie, major mistakes I'm making.
entry/exit
weekly survey
Aside from all these petty ideas, I think I'm learning a bit about my mentors. For instance, from my first pass at their ideas, it seems that a lot of them understand the basics of constructivist teaching. Of course, being able to do it is a whole other issue! But I really expected less understanding of active learning than I'm seeing on their Entry questionnaires.
I still feel a little lost as to what I'm really going to do with all of this information, but I'm sure it will bubble to the surface when I need it to.
