“The area I decided to focus my inquiry on is ….”
the way that mentors connect with their students and develop a relationship
“This is important to me because … “
According to David Brooks, you can't learn from someone you don't love. Developing a personal relationship is key to remote mentors being able to help their students. I am making the assumption that with a stronger relationship, mentors will be more effective in helping students learn math and science concepts.
“The question I am asking is … “(This is the most current version of your question.)
How do remote mentors develop a relationship with 8th grade students?
“The context I teach in is … “(describe your class and your school)
I am the program manager for the We Teach Science Foundation. We connect mentors who are professionals in math, science, technology and engineering with 8th grade students for remote mentoring. The pairs meet once per week to work on math and science.
“The data I collected to answer my question … “(Describe your data sources.)
-4 focal pairs-observed sessions using a rubric to look for changes
-student and mentor surveys on survey monkey
-student end of the year video surveys
-Mentor end of year interviews--(need to do this)
-student attendance
-student rubrics
(In the PowerPoint and on the poster, you will want to include examples of your data – it would be great if you could scan and post that to your blog, but that is not a requirement for the homework.)
“The changes I have made in my teaching practice as a result of my inquiry are … “ (These are implications of your study.)
-I created specific workshops around relationship and questioning skills
-I gave specific feedback to individuals.
-shifted our plans for relationship building for next year (more in-person events, calls to families, in-mail system, clear expectations for students)
“The changes I have seen in my focal students as a result of my inquiry are ….” (These are findings of your study.)
-Well, I'm still working on this. Overall, I definitely saw mentors take more time to talk with their students. I also noticed that as students got more comfortable, they were able to help their mentors more. This makes me realize that we need to prep students about what it means to be a student in the program, and not just throw them in.
-??? really going to get on this. Currently doing some cross-checking on what's been watched, etc.
