After reading Michelle's comments, it definitely gets me to think about what kind of direct teaching I'm doing on choosing books. I think some of the things that are missing are:
-book recs from kids to each other. need to set that up more explicitly
-ways to deal with challenging words, how to stick with books.
-my own book talks on interesting and more challenging books. I'd say lots of kids are reading, but I notice my focal students have a super hard time getting through their books.
However, some points I've noticed:
-Both Shi-Lin and (maybe) Dexter have actually read their book more than one day. Yea!
-Diana does actually seem to understand what she reads better than I thought. The issue is she isn't really doing it.
I haven't really gotten in to the peer suggestion thing. I need to be more explicit with that. I'm going to try a reflection sheet and then have them share right after that with their groups. Then I think for homework I will have them create a poster for a book suggestion.
