Using peers!

wow, today Dexter asked a bunch of people for recommendations on books to read. And then, he sat down and read the book storm breaker, based on a suggestion by Dmitry.  For like 10 whole minutes!  I think this could have happened bc I had them do a form where they reflected on some of the books they've read this fall and then thought of books they'd like to recommend to others. Then we had a sharing group where they talked about their books.  Possibly putting focus on creating a culture of sharing books is helping. The question then is how to keep him reading the same book. And actually feeling success with it.
Unfortunately he did not have a reading log to turn in today...there's always next week.

Also, another student asked about reading books with other kids. So i think on Monday I'm going to offer the idea of reading books in groups as an optional activity.
