This
year I want to focus on reading comprehension strategies. I want there
to be a focus on my students of color, bc those are mostly the ones who
are coming to me with low reading levels. I was thinking about:
-doing reading assessments with all kids
-looking at who is low
-thinking about a weekly structure for reading instruction which would include:
-whole class lessons
-reading response letters-which would need to include the strategy we’re working on
-monthly reading passages with a response that will relate to the strategy we’ve been working on
-weekly charts with a focus on the reading strategy
-weekly reading logs
-book groups where they focus on the strategy we’ve been working on
Look for reading assessment changes
look to see how many times they use the strategy in the letter over time
look to see how they do on monthly reading passages.
Other thoughts: along with reading log, what could they do to demonstrate their comprehension?
-comments already heard from kids this year:
“I don’t think when I read. I just read the words on the page”
“I don’t read”
