Just had a mini breakthrough! I just got into a conversation with the 4th grade teacher about book groups, reading strategies, etc. It was interesting, we were talking about how to get book clubs to work well. The reason I was in her room in the first place is that she has a copier in a closet in her room. This is an important detail because I was carrying the textbook chapter that I was copying for students.
She says, "oh, what's that?" I'm like, "this, oh it's just the textbook" She like, "is that related to book clubs?" I go, "no, this is separate, it's social studies." As the words came out of my mouth, I'm like, duh, it shouldn't be separate. I should have them using the same reading strategies for using the textbook as they are for their novels.
So I quickly went back to make a sheet to go with the text book. So far this year I've had them answer the questions at the end of the chapter. Well, that's not going so well, because, it's clear, they don't really get it. So, they need to be using the strategies to help them understand, right?
Also, after I made and copied the sheet I looked at the questions at the back. And I was like, really these questions are about the bigger idea. So, what I think I need to add to the sheet is, a big idea part. What's the main thing to take away.
Then, we could actually do one of those make an appointment or even move down the line games where they have to say what they think the main idea of the chapter is.
What this still doesn't deal with is those students who just aren't doing their homework, but that's another topic for another day.
