Leveling about levels

So Rosa is pushing me to really get kids to read on their levels.  They have to have a book that they can understand or we can't get anywhere. So I"m really torn. Because Xavier wants to read this book called Deadline that one of his friends recommended, and I don't think it's really going to be a good book for him. I think I need to go raid the k-5 leveled library and try to find a book that he and Joshua and maybe a few others could read.  Or, I just try to let him read this book and hope that he's excited enough about it. He mostly did alright with Seedfolks basic comprehension. But reading independently, he's not able to do that. Or did he? Maybe I need to go back and look at his scores over time to see if they did indeed improve. I have this feeling that they did, but maybe they didn't.

First semester
11.08-2.5/5
12.04-2/5
12.11-3/5

Second Semester
1.08- 5/5
1.15- 0/5*marked as missing. Perhaps he never turned it in on purpose or not. Not sure.
2.12-3/5
2.19- 4/5
2.26-  3/5

So, actually not terrible.  He's got one 5, a four, two 3s, and a zero this semester.

My biggest things I need to overcome are:
motivation-which I think peer pressure will help with
better methods of assessing comprehension
be explicit and level with them about their levels
provide support
