So I've listened to about 5 reading partner conversations this year. I'd like to do more, but it's time consuming. The biggest thing I've learned so far. I'M NOT ALLOWING THE PROPER AMOUNT OF TIME. It feels like so long to me and I'm so worried that they're off task. But for those actually doing it, they just barely get started and I call time. So I realized I actually only had them talking for about a minute and a half each. That's just silly. Because by the time they get set up and decide who is going first and all of that, they've wasted a couple of minutes.
So my first finding is small, just allow more time for these conversations to happen.
If i think about what success would look like, I think it would be trying to have a deeper conversation. So, here was C. talking about the book the Uglies, and we've heard a little about that book bc someone else did a book presentation on it. And C. explains how he doesn't think the character Tally will ever become a pretty. But G. doesn't see that as a place to begin a real conversation. So how do I get kids to see these books as conversation pieces rather than just a regurgitation of the text they've read?
Is that a reasonable expectation? Should i read up on kids discussing books?
My first instinct is that it is more modeling. So I'd need to figure out how to do that. Fish bowl?
