12.6- beginning of group post

1. What question are you thinking about?

How can I get resistant readers to read and stick with their book. How can I assess their understanding if they do read?

2. What specifically do you want students to learn and be able to do?
I want students to read and enjoy their books. I want them to sustain attention for books and be readers!

3. What is something that you have learned about your focal students’ learning that has surprised you or been unexpected?

They are excited about their books. They both asked to do a book talk and have written positively about their books. So I guess it makes me wonder, why am I concerned about them? Because they don't sustain books or because they keep re-reading the same book.

4. Look at the work you brought today, what do you notice? What do you wonder?
I brought new reading logs. In Dexter's logs I see that he claims he read the Invention of Huga Caberet, but I've never seen him with that book.  Then the next week he put Skate Mag and Game Informer.  Again, not exactly literature. I think all it shows me is that he isn't reading.

For Shi-Lin, the last one I have from her is from 11/16. She's still reading the Oustiders, I also notice that she reads about 15 minutes each day, when the requirement is 30.  Her letters are also about the Outsiders and at first I thought she was writing more, but now i'm not sure.  One thing I notice is she actually puts her thinking into her letters. At least for one or two sentences. So do I maybe need to explicitly teach more reading strategies?
