So I instituted voluntary book groups. About 20 out of the 26 students chose to be in the groups. Of those, nearly all did their reading. Dexter did read for his group and I recorded their conversation. He didn't really seem to understand what he read, but had Neil to explain it to him. Neil rattled off a summary of what happened twice. The second time around there was a discussion of the sequence of events and where the kid was. There was a little bit of discussion about the bigger themes of the book, like that the boy was racist (The Cay is the book they are reading). Mostly Dexter was checked out, but he did read the book (or so he claims) and he had it written down on his reading log.
Shi-Lin has finally finished The Outsiders and called me over to tell me that on Friday. We worked on finding another book for her. One thing to watch on her is how fast she can get through a book. Needing to go back and re-read is a strategy to use, but you hope you don't have to use it.
Diana didn't really read much this week and I'm pretty sure she admitted it. That might be progress. She said she didn't have a book to read.
The other thing I did was teach the skill of questioning and then how to categorize questions. Then I had them each write a question about their book to bring to group.
